Background

My Dress-Up Darling is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Shinichi Fukuda. It began serialization in Square Enix’s Young Gangan in January 2018, and has been compiled into ten volumes as of September 2022. An anime television series adaptation by CloverWorks aired from January to March 2022.

Plot

High school student Wakana Gojou spends his days perfecting the art of making hina dolls, hoping to eventually reach his grandfather’s level of expertise. While his fellow teenagers busy themselves with pop culture, Gojou finds bliss in sewing clothes for his dolls. Nonetheless, he goes to great lengths to keep his unique hobby a secret, as he believes that he would be ridiculed were it revealed. Enter Marin Kitagawa, an extraordinarily pretty girl whose confidence and poise are in stark contrast to Gojou’s meekness. It would defy common sense for the friendless Gojou to mix with the likes of Kitagawa, who is always surrounded by her peers. However, the unimaginable happens when Kitagawa discovers Gojou’s prowess with a sewing machine and brightly confesses to him about her own hobby: cosplay. Because her sewing skills are pitiable, she decides to enlist his help. As Gojou and Kitagawa work together on one cosplay outfit after another, they cannot help but grow close even though their lives are worlds apart.

Review

I honestly really enjoyed this anime I completely understand why Kitagawa is everyone’s favorite waifu right now I love her character in the show. She’s such a caring person and a lot more outgoing than the main character which adds a good balance between their relationship. I enjoy rom-com animes a lot and this one is no exception sometimes I do catch myself screaming at the screen “WHY HAVEN’T THEY KISSED YET” but that’s just my normal response to romance anime. I really enjoyed the different take in the plot with Gojou having a trade that he’s embarrassed about yet it really comes in handy with making Kitagawa’s dreams of being a cosplayer come true. I feel like sometimes the basic were in high school and like each other but don’t say because plot reasons story is so tiring and over done it’s good to have one where they are bonding over something that they both cherish. I also like how they both grow a liking and understanding to each others hobbies and dreams. If you want a really good rom-com that has fan service but only when it’s needed and not boosted all over the screen then definitely you should give this anime a shot I really wasn’t expecting much when I decided to watch it but now I’m thinking of picking up the Manga just to continue the story.
