Hello! Thank you for Tuning in to Green Tea anime. Today I’m going to review chainsaw man and let you know if it’s worth the watch or read. if you dont like to read or just prefer a video instead please check out my youtube channel GreenTea to watch the review. I have read the chainsaw man manga and I am currently caught up in the anime as well, so here are my thoughts on the popular series. Before I dive into my review I will be giving a background on the anime feel free to skip that part if you want but I do love to give context on the creator and also the story behind the anime when I do these reviews. With the introduction out the way let’s get to it!
Background
Chainsaw man was created by Tatsuki Fujimoto he created other works such as fire punch, look back, and goodbye Eri. In 2011, Fujimoto drew his first one-shot work, Niwa ni wa Niwa Niwatori ga ita (庭には二羽ニワトリがいた, “There Were Two Chickens in the Garden”), which was nominated for the December Jump SQ monthly award. Chainsaw man which was his forth work, wouldn’t be created until 2018 where it was published on December 3, 2018 and ran until December 14, 2020 in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen jump. The series which consisted of eleven volumes was voted number one on the list of best manga of 2021 for male readers, and earned the 66th Shogakukan Manga Award for Best Shonen Manga. It won some more awards in 2022 but for not let’s move on the the plot of chainsaws man.
Plot
Chainsaw man follows the story of Denji, an impoverished young man who makes a contract that fuses his body with that of a dog-like devil named Pochita, granting him the ability to transform parts of his body into chainsaws. Denji eventually joins the Public Safety Devil Hunters, a government agency focused on fighting against devils whenever they become a threat to the world.
Review
While the basic plot of Chainsaw man sounds familiar at first striking similarities to the hit series Jujitsu Kaisen, Kaiju No8, and demon slayer. it is very unique and definitely one of the more creative anime’s out there. In the first episode you really understand Denji’s situation and his relationship with Pochita the dog like demon that’s been living with him since he saved the demon at his fathers funeral. Denji was left with his fathers overwhelming debt and now must pay it off to the yakuza or get chopped up and sold off. As the years go by he ends up becoming a demon slayer for the yakuza because it pays the most money but since the debt is so overwhelming he is constantly doing other odd jobs just to survive only eating a piece of bread for every meal. The first episode does a perfect job at representing the kind of person Denji is as someone who will do anything for money even if its eating a lit cigarette. You also see just how unfortunate his life is and why when he is offered to work under Makima at the Public Safety Devil Hunters he very happily accepts. there is a difference between the manga and anime that happens often with the anime not including pieces or parts of the manga because they deem it not needed or relevant to the main story but what I will say I truly enjoy the manga and the flow of the story more than the anime. I have been seeing people on Anitwitter (anime twitter) complain about the CGI that is being used by MAPPA to animate the fight scenes of the show I personally think the CGI is really good and smooth I have no complaints at all MAPPA did a really good job animating Chainsaw man. Also just to give you some more examples of animes MAPPA has animated such as The God of High School, Jujutsu Kaisen and its prequel film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, and Attack on Titan: The Final Season they have a really good record and even have the upcoming second season of Vinland Saga and adaptation of Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku on the way which I am very excited about. So if you’ve seen any of those animes you can kind of expect the same if not better animation. If you love Shonen anime this is definitely the next one up it also has a darker plot than most which I appreciate. this show also involves a lot of Gore so if you are into that this is also perfect for you I appreciate the gore its not to much that I feel like most people wont be able to handle. I will rate the show a 9/10 overall and definitely will recommend it to most.
